Biggest Loser "Where Are They Now?"

Biggest Loser came up when we were on the machines yesterday, so I thought this link from Yahoo was timely.

They only have recaps for 5 people, one of which doesn't have a current photo and who admits that he hasn't had the same success in keeping the weight off since leaving the ranch.

Mendy - I noticed that on the show's site, you can watch the first episode online. http://nbc.com/biggestloser

And when he spotted Jillian standing on various contestants as they were doing wall work, my husband turned to me and asked if that's what happens at the community center on Mondays. :)

I have a love/hate relationship with this show. I love watching it for motivation and I always look for someone who is my height and starting weight as motivation (Heba is it this time around.) I think the transitions that they're able to undergo are so amazing, and I have to have tissues close by while watching because I can empathize with what they're going through.

But I really hate the message that it sends about losing weight in general. The ranch setting is just so insular. All they have to do every day is concentrate on losing weight - no jobs, no families or friends, no daily pressures or household schedules to contend with. I've gone through a few cycles of the show where my Weight Watchers meetings will have an increase in new members, but when they don't drop big, double-digits numbers in the first few weeks like they do on the show, they stop trying and quit. It's frustrating, but I know weight loss is something that a person has to be ready to commit time and effort to.

Just my $.02... :)

Andrea- I feel the exact same way about that show. I actually love Gillian and sometimes steal her ideas, but I hate it when the host (the Day of our lives gal) goes, "aren't your a little dissappointed that you only lost 2 pounds this week?"... Boy that makes my skin boil.

Oh Mendy don't diss on my girl Allison Sweeney aka 'Sammie', you know I am a Days fan! :)

I agree about the show, I like watchiing it, but at the same time its so unrealistic. The thing that I question the most is how many of those people will go back home and really keep the weight off? Maybe they are motivated for life, but then again what if they pick up those bad habits again and stop working out. Its so easy to get unmotivated, like last night I almost didn't go to my kickboxing class because I was a little under the weather, but then I thought about it an realized how hard I have been working and after the workout I felt ten times better!

At least some of the contestants make the statement that "in the real world, losing 1-2 pounds a week would be fantastic!" Yet those words are always followed by "but here on the ranch, it won't cut it." Whatever. :/

I did appreciate that the show focused on the fact that the second week is usually a crummy plateau week. So much of what they drop that first week has got to be insane water weight. And the guys that got the boot look amazing - especially the son. No more giant bowl of alfredo pasta anymore - good for him!!

Sweeney's an okay host, I guess as much as one can be on a scripted reality show like this. Her reactions last season (maybe two seasons ago) when Jillian went off on her at the weigh in were pure comic gold. :) She is, however, a vast improvement over Caroline Rhea.
